The Computer GUI reached the mainstream of computing with the introduction of the Apple Macintosh in 1984. Prior to the Mac, most users interacted with systems purely via text and a keyboard. All actions had to be manually entered as system commands, and you could only have one application on the screen at a time. The GUI, combined with the mouse, brought computers to the masses. Now it's rare to see anyone but the most technical using a Command Line Interface.
