If you've ever been on IRC, you'll notice one thing that's different from the forums (aside from being real-time): the lack of emoticons. However, just because there aren't graphical emoticons doesn't mean there aren't any at all. This is meant as a rundown of what text smilies mean paired with a more understandable reference.

Acronyms are everywhere on the net, and IRC is no different. Here's a list of some commonly used acronyms and their meanings.

  • lol = laughing out loud
  • rofl = rolling on floor laughing
  • lmao = laughing my ass off
  • ftw = for the win ("that's awesome")
  • ftl = for the lose ("dude, that sucks")
  • brb = be right back
  • bbs = be back soon
  • bbiab = be back in a bit
  • bbiaf = be back in a few
  • bbl = be back later
  • wtf = what the f#$k
  • iirc = if I recall correctly
  • afaik = as far as I know
  • imho = in my honest/humble opinion
  • ttyl = talk to you later
  • ttfn = ta ta for now
  • omg = oh my god
  • asap = as soon as possible
  • aka = also known as
  • btw = by the way
  • afk = away from keyboard
  • idk = I don't know
  • jk = just kidding
  • rtfm = read the f#$king manual
  • wb = welcome back
  • fyi = for your info
