License

With any wiki, it is important to declare the license under which content is made available. On the WinCustomize Wiki, content is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License. We selected this license because we want to allow the greatest freedom possible to our contributors while still ensuring proper credit is given for the hard work and time put into contributing to this site. We recognize that the Windows Customization community has built itself on sharing knowledge and expertise across multiple groups and sites, and do not want this wiki to go against that history of sharing and open exchange. The license itself is long and difficult, but for a quick summary, here is what this license means for you, the reader or contributor:

Any original content on this site is free to share or create derivative works of, provided you meet the following requirements:

  • You give proper credit to this wiki and the original article by providing a reference in the following format:
    • Web Link: Original article (insert article link here) from the WinCustomize Wiki
    • Publication (Article, Academic Paper etc.): Use your favorite bibliography citation style. Author attribution to the WinCustomize Wiki, with appropriate link.
  • If you modify work posted here by editing, transforming or adding to it in any way, and then provide it elsewhere in any format, you must share it under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License as well. Allowing for similar redistribution or derivative works.

If you want to read the full text of the license, you may do so here.

Use of Copyrighted Material In Articles

This is a modification of Using copyrighted work from others from Wikipedia's Copyright Page [1]

All works are copyrighted unless they either fall into the public domain or their copyright is explicitly disclaimed. If you use part of a copyrighted work under "fair use", or if you obtain special permission to use a copyrighted work from the copyright holder under the terms of our license, you must make a note of that fact (along with names and dates).

Never use materials that infringe the copyrights of others. This could create legal liabilities and seriously hurt the project. If in doubt, write it yourself.

Note that copyright law governs the creative expression of ideas, not the ideas or information themselves. Therefore, it is legal to read an encyclopedia article or other work, reformulate the concepts in your own words, and submit it to the WinCustomize Wiki. However, please cite original sources as they may be relevant to the article.

Fair Use

Screenshots & Other Images: In skinning, it is often required to provide illustration to explain something to another user. Screenshots containing other people's work (e.g. a screenshot showing a skin by another artist) fall under the heading of fair use so long as you do not claim or imply you are the artist behind the work shown. The same goes for images such as previews of icon sets, cursors, application skins etc. Where possible, always provide citations for any work you use as illustration that is not your own. Wallpapers are a special case, you may only provide a small preview (No larger than 300x300) and a link to the original.

Code: With work like DesktopX code, you may not repost code (in whole or in part) unless it was written by you, or you have permission from the original author. This does not apply to individual lines of code to show how a basic function works, but is to prevent users from reposting entire application functions written by other users.

Articles/Tutorials/Text: If you find that an article has already been written elsewhere on a topic and is far better written than you feel you could do yourself that you feel should be included in this Wiki, you may provide a short brief of the original text, with a link to the full article. These briefs should be no more than one paragraph from the original article. Always provide a proper by-line with the article link.
