In 2001, Winky was first conceived during a contest on WinCustomize in which users could design or choose a site logo or mascot. The chameleon that was ultimately chosen as site mascot, was originally designed by Alexandrie of Pixtudio. It was among a few different versions the artist submitted as seen here.

Before Winky, the Wincustomize logo was simply a swirled riff on the Windows Logo along with the site name. Later, Winky came to be used in conjunction with or replace that logo most places on the site.

From his debut to the present date, there have been 2 versions of the chameleon. The latest version was designed by Boogiebac and is currently still in use.
